Man with dark hair, glasses, and a serious expression wearing a suit, sitting in front of a city skyline with tall buildings.

Special Counsel

Peter commenced his Articles in March 1976, just two months after the Family Law Act commenced operation, and has been at the forefront of the development of family law in Australia ever since. With 50 years in practice, his experience enables him to quickly identify the key issues in a matter and focus on practical, effective solutions.

Peter is an Accredited Specialist in Family Law, and has acted across all facets of family law, from parenting disputes to complex financial and third-party proceedings. He was involved in the landmark High Court case Ascot Investments Pty Ltd v Harper, which remains significant in defining third-party rights in family law proceedings.

While highly experienced in litigation, Peter prefers wherever possible to achieve settlements that provide long-term certainty and stability. His approach is focused on helping separating couples disengage constructively and maintain workable relationships for the benefit of their families.

Peter was instrumental in establishing Specialist Accreditation in Victoria and, in 1986, was appointed inaugural Chairman of the Advisory Committee to the Accreditation Board for Law Specialists. Family Law became the first Specialist Accreditation offered in Australia, and Peter became an Accredited Specialist in Family Law in 1989.

Since 1978, Peter has also instructed law graduates in Family Law at the Leo Cussen Centre for Law. He is a trained Collaborative Lawyer and Mediator, a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, and a member of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia.

Peter has written extensively on family law, taxation and financial settlements. His publications include The Family Law Practice Manual, Family Law Financial Settlements and Tax Issues in Family Law: The Difference Between Hacking and Carving, now in its 14th edition. He has also presented numerous papers to lawyers, accountants and financial planners, with a particular interest in Financial Agreements, asset protection and succession planning.
